2009 Public Opinion Polling


Overview
BIOTECanada’s annual national opinion survey, undertaken by Nanos Research, found Canadians value biotechnology more than ever and believe their governments should invest in research and commercialization.
Eighty-eight percent of Canadians understand biotechnology is important to future prosperity, indicating support for a strong bio-based economy in Canada; based on a sound business framework, and financing for innovative firms.  A strong majority of Canadians support research in biotechnology and the use of products and processes that involve biotechnology.

What we found:
 Canadians value biotechnology.
  • More than four of every five (87 %) of Canadians support research involving biotechnology.
  • Four out of five (87%) support the use of products and processes involving biotechnology.
Canadians believe biotechnology is important to the economy.
  • Biotechnology creates prosperity: Nine of every ten Canadians (91%) believe biotechnology is important to Canada’s future economic prosperity. And 4 of every 5 (84 %) would be concerned about the loss of emerging Canadian biotechnology firms.
  • Global leadership important: 3 out of 4 Canadians (68 %) were concerned about Canada’s global competitiveness in science and technology
Canadians want their governments to support the growth and development of biotechnology companies in Canada.
  • Financial incentives for biotechnology innovation:  Almost nine of every ten Canadians (86%) supported grants to emerging companies to support research and product development.
  • Current federal government performance: 4 out of 10 (35 %) believed the Government of Canada is doing a good job of supporting emerging companies seeking to commercialize products. 4 out of 10 (37 %) believed the Government of Canada is doing a good job supporting university research. And, 4 out of every 10 (37 %) believed the Federal Government is doing a good job at creating an environment that allows emerging firms to adopt innovative research.

The survey is a random telephone survey of 1003 Canadians, conducted from August 28 to September 2, 2009. The margin of accuracy is ±3.1 %, 19 times out of 20.
